This miniature of the Black Cat was created to celebrate Pride Month 2021 and raise money for the LGBT+ community through a sweepstakes competition. $1,865 was raised for various LGBTQ+ organizations and Sydney K. was randomly selected as the winner of the miniature.
The Black Cat, located on Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake, was the site of the nation’s first documented protest in support of LGBTQ civil rights.
The protest was a result of an LAPD raid that occurred during New Year’s Eve celebrations in 1967. Undercover police officers waited for queer patrons to kiss at midnight, before dragging them into the street, beating and arresting them. It was an event that sparked a movement.
