Fugetsu-Do

Little Tokyo

Inspired by Fugetsu-Do located at 315 E. 1st St, Los Angeles, CA.

Situated in Little Tokyo, LA's second oldest neighborhood and one of the three remaining historic Japantowns, Fugetsu-Do has been making traditional Japanese mochi and manju for over 117 years!

Passed down through three generations of family ownership, the Kito's have operated this sweet shop since 1903 and over the years have weathered a series of unimaginable challenges. From the internment camps of WWII, to depressions and pandemics, and the ever-present threat of gentrification, Fugetsu-Do is an impressive story of resilience and its significance to the community has made it an unquestionable icon of Little Tokyo and the City of Los Angeles.

The first edition of this artwork was donated to the Little Tokyo Community Council to help support local businesses affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. It raised $5,010 for the Little Tokyo business community

Little Tokyo continues to be a community, cultural, and spiritual home for the broader Nikkei community, as well as a space for Asian American Arts, and those that identify with Little Tokyo as home.
